Best Mattresses UK (2026)
A mattress can only be judged by sleeping on it. This guide is based on Expert Reviews' roundup of the mattresses it has tested (around 75 in all), each slept on for at least two weeks and up to three months, with standardised tests for temperature retention and firmness. Testers judged comfort and firmness, temperature control, motion isolation, the base used and value for money. Only mattresses that earned five stars on first review are included, and prices are double-size prices as reviewed.

Our top pick
REM-Fit Natural Lux Hybrid
Best overall
Expert Reviews' Best Buy: a totally natural mattress, free of synthetic foam, that suits a range of sleeping positions and body weights and proved fairly firm, most comfortable on the back for the tester. Temperature regulation was excellent: in a body heat test the surface dropped from 30°C to just over 21°C in a couple of minutes. Natural materials cost more, and it can feel too firm for some, with some motion transfer.
- All-natural materials
- Impressive temperature regulation

Best budget
Origin Hybrid Mattress
Expert Reviews' top pick on a budget, from a June 2024 review that earned five stars and a Recommended Award. It has just enough softness for those who like cushioning while giving the ergonomic support firm-mattress fans prefer, and neither the reviewer nor their partner felt the edge dip significantly. It has no removable cover for easy cleaning.

Panda Hybrid Mattress
Expert Reviews' September 2024 review found plenty of support right up to the edges and excellent temperature regulation: after warming the surface with a heat pad the temperature dropped from 50°C to 26.9°C in four minutes. It's a much more affordable alternative to the brand's Hybrid Bamboo Pro. It can feel too firm for some, and the removable cover is awkward to take off and refit.

Best for hot sleepers
Emma Original Pro
Reviewed as the Emma Hybrid Thermosync in April 2025. Despite memory foam's reputation for trapping heat, it dropped from 30°C to 22.6°C in four minutes in the temperature test, and is comfortable in a range of sleeping positions. It's softer than other options but still supportive, though it may be too soft for those who prefer a firm mattress. Expert Reviews notes it's now much cheaper than at launch.

Best for back pain
Dreams Dream Team Romsey Pocket Sprung
Reviewed in March 2025: the firm orthopaedic support can make a real difference to back pain. The tester said her back pain had vanished within a few days of sleeping on it on her back. Best suited to average and heavier weight sleepers, and with little foam it's also good for hot sleepers, but it may be too firm for lightweight side sleepers. Delivery to a room of your choice costs an extra £29.

Best premium bed-in-a-box
Simba Hybrid Pro
Reviewed in April 2025: one of the most comfortable bed-in-a-box mattresses tested, with a top wool layer that regulates temperature better than mattresses containing only memory foam, and extra microsprings that make it bouncy and breathable. The reviewer liked it so much they didn't want to go back to their regular mattress. It's expensive for a bed-in-a-box.
- Type

Best for hotel comfort
Silentnight Premier Inn 2.0 Mattress
Reviewed in March 2025: extremely supportive, so much so the tester could lie right at the edge without feeling it would buckle, and it's the mattress the Home Editor sleeps on every night. It's almost identical to the mattresses in Premier Inn hotels and generously deep, though on the firmer side. It can't be flipped but can be rotated using the side handles.

Best for choice of firmness
Slumberland Air 6.0 Memory Mattress
Reviewed in November 2025: despite being synthetic it dissipated heat well, dropping from 30°C to 18.7°C in a couple of minutes, and the standout benefit is the choice of soft, medium or firm. The reviewer tested the firm version, found it perfect for back sleeping and said her aches and pains disappeared overnight. Edge support could be better.

Best natural on a budget
Happy Beds The Annabel Mattress
Reviewed in March 2026: a natural-materials alternative to the Hypnos when budget won't stretch, made from layers of wool, cashmere and silk over pocket springs. The reviewer found it much firmer than the 'medium firm' description suggests, but comfortable with excellent lumbar support. It has no trial period, so you can't test it at home first.

Buying guide
How firm should my mattress be?
It depends on your weight and sleeping position. Several picks here run firm: the REM-Fit, Dreams Romsey and Happy Beds Annabel suit back sleepers and heavier sleepers but may be too firm for lightweight side sleepers. The Emma Original Pro is softer, and the Slumberland Air 6.0 comes in soft, medium and firm.
What's the best mattress for hot sleepers?
Expert Reviews measured how quickly the surface cooled after body heat: the Slumberland dropped from 30°C to 18.7°C, the REM-Fit to just over 21°C and the Emma Original Pro to 22.6°C in four minutes. Natural fillings like wool and cotton, or little foam, as in the Dreams Romsey, also help.
Is a home trial worth having?
Yes, since comfort is personal. The Origin, Emma, Simba and REM-Fit all offer 200-night trials, Panda and Dreams 100 nights. Hypnos and Slumberland offer 40-night exchange-only trials, and the Happy Beds Annabel has none. Read the terms on returns carefully.
Do I need to turn my mattress?
It varies by model. The Origin, Panda and Emma here need no turning, the REM-Fit should be rotated every three months, and the Simba more often for the first six months. Pillow-top mattresses like the Silentnight can't be flipped but can be rotated to even out wear.
