Best Stair Gates UK (2026)
A stair gate has to stay put when a toddler pulls on it, yet open easily for you with one hand. This guide is based on Mumsnet's tested roundup (updated May 2026), where an independent panel of parent-testers installed and used a number of gates in their homes over several weeks, scoring each out of five on six criteria: safety and stability, assembly and installation, day-to-day use, ease of cleaning, aesthetics and value. Prices shown are RRPs quoted by Mumsnet. Pressure-fit gates should not be used at the top of the stairs unless designed for it, and any gate should be checked regularly.

Our top pick
BabyDan Guard Me Auto Retractable Safety Guard
Best overall
Mumsnet's Best Buy: unlike gates with a trip-hazard bar, it folds and fully retracts at the touch of a button, leaving the path clear, and can be operated one-handed (once you get used to the slide-and-push technique). It fits a wide range of spaces and can be used at the top or bottom of stairs. It scored 43 out of 48 in testing. It's pricey, installation is lengthy despite clear instructions, it needs at least 9cm clearance from the top of the stairs, and skirting boards can make fitting awkward.
- One-handed opening
- Folds back neatly when not in use
- Fits a wide variety of spaces, including very narrow openings

The cheapest gate Mumsnet tested, and it still performed well: its tester awarded it 41 out of 48, just two points shy of the top scorers, and fitted it in 45 minutes. It has a child-proof double-locking system that's easy for adults. Safety 1st SecurTech Flat Step Safety Gate
Mumsnet's Top Tested pressure-fit gate that, unlike other pressure-fit gates, can be used at the top of stairs, with a flat step you can vacuum over and a visual indicator that shows it's locked. Once installed and the locking mechanism understood, the tester found it one of the easiest to use. It took an hour to install, longer than any other pressure-fit gate, and despite the one-handed claim she often needed both hands. It needs checking and tightening regularly.

Safety 1st Wall Fix Extending Metal Gate
Mumsnet's tester scored it 43 out of 48, level with the BabyDan Guard Me. It extends to fit 62 to 102cm without buying extras, opens both ways and can be lifted off its hinges when not in use, with no trip hazard at the base. It was simple to open after a day or two, but tricky to install: two adults needed about 90 minutes. It can get in the way if left open in narrow corridors.

Best pressure-fit
Munchkin Lindam Sure Shut Axis Safety Gate
Mumsnet found installation quick and easy with no drilling: the frame squeezes against the walls, though wall cups attach with sticky pads. Its tester found it stayed firmly in place and didn't wobble when pulled, and it's easy to clean and vacuum around. It has a bar to step over, so mustn't be used at the top of stairs, and should be checked and tightened daily.

- 76 to 82cm (up to 117cm with extensions)
- Price guide
- RRP £30

- One-handed opening in either direction

Best for wide spaces
BabyDan FlexiFit Metal Stair Gate
Tested by the Mumsnet team as a versatile choice for larger openings, covering 67 to 105.5cm without extras. Swivelling brackets allow multi-directional opening, inside or outside a door frame and at almost any angle, and a simple press-and-pull handle can be operated with one hand. It requires screw-fit assembly.

- RRP £35
Pros
- Suitable for spaces up to 105.5cm wide

Best no-trip
BabyDan No Trip Safety Gate
Mumsnet found a relatively easy-to-secure gate for the top of stairs or busy doorways, in a more contemporary and less noisy design than traditional metal bars. It opens from both sides with a double safety lock that's easy to open one-handed. The width range is limited, so it suits only smaller openings, and some parents say the installation guide is hard to read and follow.
- Type
- Screw-fit
- Width
- 71.5 to 78.5cm
- Price guide
- RRP £30
Pros
- One-handed opening
- No-trip design

Cons

- Installation guide is hard to follow for some parents
Best for awkward spaces
Cuggl Wall Fix Extending Gate
Mumsnet's tester found it works well and is very good value 'once installed', with multi-directional use, a double-locking mechanism and one-handed opening, and can be used at the top of the stairs. It scored 40 out of 48 versus 43 for the similar Safety 1st gate, mainly because installation is fiddly: it took her two hours.

- Screw-fit
- Width
- 60 to 97cm
- Price guide
- RRP £20 (Mumsnet also quotes £25)
Pros
- One-handed opening

Best wooden
Cuggl Natural Wooden Safety Gate
Mumsnet's tester found it affordable and easy to use with a double locking system for peace of mind. It expands to fit wider doorways without pricey expansion packs, has no trip-hazard bar, and shows less dirt than white gates. The one downside was that it was difficult to install, so leave plenty of time.

- Price guide
- £35 (at time of writing)
Pros
- Affordable price
- Expands to fit wider doorways

Buying guide
Pressure-fit or screw-fit?
Screw-fit gates are drilled into the wall or bannister and are the safer choice, especially at the top of stairs. Pressure-fit gates need no drilling, so suit renters, but can shift over time and need to be checked, and tightened, regularly. Most pressure-fit gates, like the Lindam Sure Shut Axis, mustn't be used at the top of stairs.
Can I use a stair gate at the top of the stairs?
Only if it's designed for it: it must have no bar to trip over at the base. In Mumsnet's tests the BabyDan Guard Me, Safety 1st Extending Metal Gate, BabyDan No Trip and Cuggl gates can be used at the top, and the Safety 1st SecurTech is the pressure-fit exception thanks to its flat step.
How do I measure for a stair gate?
Measure the gap between the walls or posts where it will fit, at the height it will be installed, then check the gate's width range. Several here fit narrow ranges (Cuggl Wall Fix 76 to 81cm), while others like the Safety 1st Extending Metal Gate span 62 to 102cm or accept extensions.
How long does installation take?
It varies. Mumsnet's testers fitted the Cuggl Wall Fix in 45 minutes, the SecurTech pressure-fit in an hour, the Safety 1st Extending Metal Gate in about 90 minutes with two adults, and the Cuggl Extending Gate in two hours. Allow plenty of time and check for skirting boards or uneven walls.
