Our top pick

Phil & Teds Parade

Best overall

Mumsnet's tester Toby gave it the highest score of everything he tested after weeks of walking across town and country, rating it particularly well for day-to-day use and value for money. It has a sturdy internal aluminium frame with washable, waterproof fabric, padded shoulder and hip belts, and a ventilated mesh back panel. An anchor stand makes it easy to secure a child solo. It has less head support than some rivals and no sunshade or rain-proof hood included.

  • Super compact, folds flat for hand luggage
  • Easy to assemble
  • Excellent storage and great value for money

Best budget

LittleLife Ranger S2

The lightest British Standard Approved backpack carrier on the market at 1.7kg, yet Mumsnet found it surprisingly sturdy, with chest and waist straps that keep it secure for both parent and child. Tester Laura gave it nine out of ten for value for money. The fully adjustable back system suits swapping between parents, and there's a comfortable face pad for napping. A sun canopy and the 6L accessory pouch both cost extra, and storage is limited without them.

Best lightweight with storage

LittleLife Cross Country S4

Mumsnet's tester Laura found buckling her daughter in easy with the x-buckle harness, and said her daughter felt safe in the seat at all times during their walks. Foot stirrups, mesh airflow panels and a fully adjustable back system suit a wide range of parent heights. It comes with a sunshade, toy loops and rear-view mirror, unlike the cheaper Ranger S2. It doesn't fold down for storage and may be less comfortable than the more robust Osprey carriers on longer hikes.

Best luxury

Osprey Poco Premium

The most fully featured carrier in Osprey's range, with 36L of storage (more than the Poco's 20L or Poco Plus's 26L) split across a zippered main pocket, lower compartment and several smaller pockets. Osprey's Adjustable AirSpeed back panel and Fit-on-the-Fly hip belt suit a wide range of torso and hip sizes, and the child cockpit is removable and machine-washable. The extra features add weight: at 3.78kg it's heavier than the Poco Plus and considerably heavier than minimal-framed carriers like the LittleLife Ranger S2, and it's costly and bulkier to store.

Best for toddlers

Deuter Kid Comfort Pro

Mumsnet found the robust aluminium frame and moveable hip fins offer excellent weight distribution that helps prevent aches across the shoulders and back when carrying older babies and toddlers, with a comfortable mesh back panel for ventilation. A generously sized 18L day backpack hooks to the chest strap for front access to drinks and sun lotion, plus a mirror to check on your child and a soft head cushion for naps. There's no zip on the bottom compartment, which feels less secure than the Osprey Poco Plus, and it's costly.

Best for travel

Osprey Poco

Mumsnet found a lightweight folding aluminium frame that's easy to carry through airports or on city breaks, with integrated foot stirrups for extra leg support and TÜV GS safety certification. It folds down neatly to fit in a car boot or as carry-on luggage, has mesh storage pockets, a lower compartment, a key clip, and an integrated kickstand for hands-free breaks. It's pricier than some rivals, though it comes with the rain cover included.

Best washable

Thule Sapling Carrier Backpack

Mumsnet found the standout feature is a mesh seat that's fully removable and machine washable, unlike the spot-clean-only seats on most framed carriers, plus a removable drool pad. The modern design suits urban use, and a child can be loaded from the top or side depending on preference. It doesn't come cheap, the rain cover is sold separately, and the velcro back adjustment feels less sturdy than on other carriers.

  • Rain cover sold separately
  • Velcro back adjustment feels less sturdy than rivals

Buying guide

Do I need a carrier with a sunshade and rain cover?

If you'll be out for hours at a time, yes. The Osprey Poco, Poco Premium and Deuter Kid Comfort Pro include a sunshade, and the Poco Premium and Poco also include a rain cover. The cheaper Phil & Teds Parade and LittleLife Ranger S2 don't include either, so factor in the extra cost if you need them.

How much does weight matter?

A lighter carrier is easier on your back over a long walk, but often trades away storage and features. The LittleLife Ranger S2 (1.7kg) and Phil & Teds Parade (2kg) are the lightest here, while the Osprey Poco Premium (3.78kg) and Deuter Kid Comfort Pro (3.68kg) are heavier but offer far more storage and adjustability.

Which carrier folds down for travel?

The Phil & Teds Parade folds flat enough to use as aircraft hand luggage, and the Osprey Poco also folds down neatly for a car boot or carry-on. The LittleLife Cross Country S4 and Thule Sapling don't fully collapse, so consider this if you're flying often.

How much storage do I actually need?

For short local walks, 6 to 12L (as on the Phil & Teds Parade or LittleLife Ranger S2) is usually enough. For all-day hikes or days out where you need nappies, snacks and spare layers, look at the Osprey Poco Premium (36L) or Thule Sapling (22L).
