Best Women's Socks UK (2026)

Picks reviewed September 2026 · Sources verified November 2026

The right sock depends on what you're doing: a soft cotton crew for everyday wear is a different job to a cushioned merino hiking sock or a running sock with blister protection. This guide is based on OutdoorGearLab's tested roundup of 16 women's socks (updated March 2025), where testers wore each pair in everyday scenarios, from long walks and gym sessions to dinner parties and lounging at home, and scored comfort and all-day performance, breathability, odour retention and style. It is a US test, so we've included only brands that are widely sold in the UK, and no prices are shown because they vary by retailer. The test covers women's everyday, athletic and outdoor socks, and doesn't cover compression or thermal bed socks.

We have not hands-on tested these products. Our picks are based on published independent tests and reviews, listed at the bottom of this page. How we pick.

Our top pick

Balega Blister Resist Quarter

Best for running (top score)

OutdoorGearLab's highest-scoring sock (84 out of 100) and its top choice for running. Testers found it soft with padding exactly where it's needed, protecting the foot on long trail runs, and hardy enough that they reached for it on every trail run in any season. The thinner top and ventilated arch help breathability. The mid-weight cushioning isn't ideal for extra-sweaty feet or hot summer days.

  • Exceptional cushioning
  • Ultra-comfy and breathable
  • Elasticated construction gives a great fit

Best for hiking

Darn Tough Hiker Full Cushion (women's)

OutdoorGearLab's top hiking sock (82 out of 100): thick bottom cushioning and reinforced heels and toes protect feet on the trail, the merino blend is soft, and it's built to last through years of use with a lifetime warranty. Testers found it runs true to size, suits narrow or wide feet, and is often the pair of choice for nights out camping. The heavy padding makes it less breathable, so it's not the best in hot weather, and it's pricey and not very versatile away from the outdoors.

Best for cushioning

Darn Tough Coolmax Micro Crew Cushion (women's)

OutdoorGearLab scored it 80 out of 100 and one reviewer called it 'one of the most comfortable socks I've tested'. Its thick, cushioned material, padded ankles and Achilles and quick-drying Coolmax blend make it a favourite for long days on your feet, and it works around the house or around town as well as outdoors. It's expensive, not very versatile in style, and too warm for hot summer days.

Best everyday athletic

Feetures High Performance Ultra Light No Show Tab

OutdoorGearLab scored it 72 out of 100. A seamless toe reduces friction and vents heat, the heel tab stops it slipping and it's truly no-show inside a shoe, moving easily between gym and office. It's stronger than its thinness suggests. It's expensive per pair, offers little cushioning for prolonged pounding, and after several days of wear got smellier than many others, so it needs regular washing.

  • Expensive
  • Little cushioning
  • Holds odour after repeated wear without washing

Best budget

Amazon Essentials Casual Crew 6-Pack

OutdoorGearLab's best-value pick (69 out of 100): a soft, mostly cotton crew in a six-pack, with a small elastic band that holds it in place without being too tight. It's great for everyday casual wear and light activity, but too thin and not wicking enough for running or hiking, and may lose elasticity over time.

Best budget no-show

Under Armour Essential No Show 6-Pack (women's)

OutdoorGearLab found it performed above average in all its tests for the price (65 out of 100): smooth against the skin, virtually invisible in shoes and wicking moisture well, keeping its shape after weeks of use. The 100% polyester is less breathable and got smellier than most other socks tested, so it needs regular washing.

Buying guide

Cotton, wool or synthetic socks?

OutdoorGearLab found cotton blends soft and cosy for everyday wear but slow to dry, and prone to stretching over time. Merino wool, as in the Darn Tough Hiker, wicks and resists odour well but is pricier. Polyester, as in the Under Armour and Feetures, dries quickly but held onto odour more in testing.

What sock height should I choose?

No-show and ankle socks, like the Feetures and Under Armour, suit trainers and warm weather. Quarter-height suits running, as with the Balega. Crew height suits everyday wear, boots and colder weather, as with the Amazon Essentials and Darn Tough crews.

Is it worth paying for premium socks?

For heavy use, often yes: Darn Tough socks come with a lifetime warranty and scored highest for comfort and durability in testing, while budget multipacks like the Amazon Essentials trade thinner material for value. Match the sock to the activity.

How do I stop socks smelling?

Wash them regularly. OutdoorGearLab found polyester socks held onto odour more than cotton or wool, and the Feetures and Under Armour got smellier than others after days of wear. Natural fibres like merino and cotton fared better on odour.
