Will a fan actually cool my room?
A fan pushes air around rather than cooling it, so it won't cool a room as well as an air conditioner. Expert Reviews notes fans are far cheaper to buy and run, and with the UK's comparatively mild, dry summers, an air conditioning unit may be overkill anyway.
Desk fan, pedestal fan or tower fan?
A desk fan (£20-£50, like the Honeywell here) only cools a desk-sized space. A pedestal fan is larger and more powerful for bigger spaces but bulky, and its height, pivot and oscillation are adjustable. A tower fan, like the Levoit or Dimplex here, gives near-pedestal cooling in a slimmer form, with less adjustability.
How noisy is too noisy for sleeping?
Expert Reviews' rule of thumb: 35-40dB is quiet, 40-45dB is bearable, and above 45dB is too loud to sleep peacefully. Always use the lower speed settings, and consider a fan with a Sleep mode, like the Princess here, which reduces speed every 30 minutes.
Are fans expensive to run?
